Hope everyone is enjoying bank holiday Monday , I know we are 🙂 This weeks Motivational Monday’s is here, with a brand new guest. Something different this week we have covered a lot of taste-makers and brands, so we thought we would bring an aspiring producer in to the mix of things.
Who are you and what’s your background?
Hey, I’m James Carter (20 years old). I’m a producer based just outside of London, south-east, in a small country village. I started out just over 3 years ago releasing bootlegs/edits on soundcloud just for self enjoyment.
What does your job consist of on a day to day basis?
In September 2016 I decided to put my education on hold taking a gap year; the plan was to study Architecture at University. I’m currently in my second ‘gap year’, and I can’t see myself going back. Day to day I make new music and actively engage within the music community, I am always trying to find new opportunities to help try a pursue this dream. I spend a lot of my time working with singer/songwriters and collaborating with other producers in Germany. Being a self-taught producer I still have a lot to learn and I’m always trying to better myself.
What’s your biggest achievement to date?
Back last December I did an official remix for Rihanna. The EP hit #1 on the billboard dance chart breaking the record held by Katy Perry.
Any tips and tricks that you wish you knew when you started?
I wish I took my time more. When I started I never took a track to 100% and just chucked it online after I felt I had a cool idea.
For the readers looking to pursue a career in your field , do you have any advice for them?
You don’t need to overthink your own music and compare yourself to other artists. Make what you enjoy and the rest should come! There aren’t always certain rules you need to follow, you can do whatever you want as long as it sounds good. Trust your ears 🙂
How do you overcome days where you have no motivation?
Whenever I have no motivation, I picture the end dream where I’d like to see myself. Following inspirational artists on social media gives me the desire to continue doing what I love. There’s no specific path that’ll make you reach that goal, which is the part of the excitement – not knowing what’ll be next around the corner. I love seeing artists get their ‘big break’, it really shows how anyone can make their dream.
Any upcoming stuff you would like to announce to the readers?
I have a few single’s and remixes in the pipeline ready for Summer, but I can’t say much more than that. On May 4th I released my most recent single ‘Somebody Like You’ with Scandinavian singer Katrine Stenbekk, I hope you enjoy it! https://open.spotify.com/track/6t0qnREJkdyH5Ojehn0kZg?si=Vj2M7NbCS82Vl1RTFr8yjg
