Motivational Monday’s Episode 25: Alex Bruski – Founder And CEO of Wave Music

Who are you and what’s your background?

My name is Alex Bruski and I created and run the Chill Electronic music promotional channel: Wave Music. I have also recently started up a new project called Paradise Music which is dedicated to genres across the board including Rock, Pop, Rap, Country, Latin, Dance and Urban R&B music. Last but not least, I also manage the electronic artist Anki.

What does your job consist of on a day to day basis?

My daily schedule is mostly listening to new music and working with Anki as well as other artists, record labels and managers. It’s great that I am able to listen to new music for my job as well as being able to share a good amount of those tracks on my channel. Now I also work with the channel managers for Paradise Music in selecting tracks for those channels as well.

What do you enjoy most about it?

I love being able to share rising artists with my subscribers and seeing the songs connect with them. It’s great to not only help the artists grow but also see that it’s not all about the biggest and hottest artists. The upcoming ones make great music that most casual listeners might miss.

What’s your biggest achievement to date?

I’ve always had the goal of reaching 100,000 subscribers since I started running a YouTube channel back in 2011. I never thought I would reach that let alone reach 1,000,000. Both of those milestones were unbelievable when I surpassed them.

Any tips and tricks that you wish you knew when you started?

Hard work and patience cannot be undervalued. As an artist or music business professional, you aren’t going to reach your goals overnight. It not only takes that hard work every day and a lot of patience knowing that your success will reach you.

For the readers looking to pursue a career in your field, do you have any advice for them?

Working your way up the chain is usually the standard method in most industries, including music. From internship, to entry level job, to mid-level employee, to manager, etc. But that’s not the only path available to you. If the opportunities aren’t there, create your own. I had no idea what I was doing when I started any of these ventures, but I learned from my mistakes and victories and created my own path.

Who are your favourite artists at the moment?

Of course Anki is at the top of that list but I’m also getting into some artists outside of the typical artists I upload on Wave Music. Lany, Pale Waves, Aquilo, Loote, Chelsea Cutler, and Kasbo are all amazing just to name a few.

What do you look for in a song or artist?

I love beautiful vocals, melodic drops and a clean mix. Above all that, I love when I can sense the raw emotion in a track. Hearing the passion is the icing on the cake that makes an incredible song.

How do you overcome days where you have no motivation?

I think getting outside my natural environment is a reset button for motivation. I usually like talking a walk or using another creative outlets to focus my energy on. For me, photography is a great outlet that helps me forget about the to do list that is yet to be done.

What do you do when your not working (for downtime)?

I used to be really into gaming (fun fact: I ran a gaming commentary channel before I started Wave Music). I’m getting back into it a bit but not as much as I used to. I also love photography, hockey and volunteering to help get shelter dogs adopted!

Any recent announcements and/or upcoming stuff you would like to announce to the readers?

I recently started seven new channels under the Paradise Music umbrella less than a month ago. Not only am I trying to create a great community for Wave Music but I am working to expand that to these other genres with Paradise Music. My subscribers trust my musical taste and I hope to continue to add that to these new channels with the help of some great curators in their respective genres.

Your own personal tips for success (either in music or life in general)?

Again, working hard is a key to success in anything you do in life. Don’t think you can be more successful than everyone else by sitting on the couch watching TV all day. If you put your mind to it and work hard, you will reach your goals!
