Who are you and what’s your background?
Hi there, my name is David Kim. I’m the founder of DK Projects, an NYC-based boutique music PR agency. I have almost a decade of experience working in various roles throughout the music industry. Previously, I’ve worked at CAA, Dubset, Magnum PR, and more.
What does your job consist of on a day to day basis?
No day is necessarily the same but the majority of my day is split between taking care of the business and taking care of clients. In terms of the business, I need to make sure my staff are happy and productive, pursue and tie up new business, and handle miscellaneous business-related tasks. In terms of my clients, I touch base with managers/artists to align strategy, schedule mailers/press blasts for pertinent information, and pitch/secure various opportunities around their music/tours/etc.
What do you enjoy most about it?
I’ve wanted to work in music for as long as I can remember and I now make a living working with my friends. What’s better than that?
What’s your biggest achievement to date?
Tough to say. None of this is about me. I’m thankful because everything “i’ve accomplished” or “achieved” is due in large part to my amazing network of friends, family, and peers. In that sense, I’d say I’m most proud to have built a life filled with amazing, inspirational people.
Any tips and tricks that you wish you knew when you started?
There are no real tricks to succeeding but I wish I knew that struggling and paying your dues is part of the process. Once I realized that there is a bigger picture at hand, it helped me take things in stride and dedicate my efforts to improving in baby steps.
For the readers looking to pursue a career in your field, do you have any advice for them?
Be kind, appreciate the ride, and keep going. I have run thousands of campaigns and several of them haven’t worked out. One failure doesn’t define you, a rejection doesn’t define you. Keep trying and keep moving, but most importantly, do it with a smile on your face.
Who are your favourite artists at the moment?
Is it an option to say all my artists? Haha just kidding but they’re all incredible and hand-selected. I’m a huge fan of Disclosure, Odesza, Gorgon City, Gallant, Daniel Caesar, SG Lewis, Hayden James… the list goes on and on.
What do you look for in a song / artist?
I’m not an A&R so nothing too technical in terms of the song. I just want to be able to feel something. The intangible feeling of belief that I need to see what I can do with this. The same applies to artists but most importantly, I want to work with good people who work hard and dream big.
How do you overcome days where you have no motivation?
I actually have a picture of my bank account from when I was really struggling to make money. As twisted as this sounds, I stare at that and I’ll never forget how it felt to not be able to make ends meet. The combination of that and the reminder that I’m doing exactly what I want with my life are enough to get me going.
What do you do when your not working (for downtime)?
Surprisingly, what normal people do! Bought a Canon 6D about a year ago and love to wander around New York taking pictures. Spend time with my dog, etc.
Any recent announcements and/or upcoming stuff you would like to announce to the readers?
In just this week, G Jones debut LP is dropping, Manila Killa is dropping the lead single to his EP, Malaa is releasing the first single from his mixtape, and more. So much incredible music coming out!
Your own personal tips for success (either in music or life in general)?
Surround yourself with people smarter than you and move out of their way.
The only constant in business is change – get comfortable with it.
Fail often, fail quickly.
Outside of those, I’d have to say: do everything with a great amount of passion or don’t do it at all, treat others with respect and kindness, and be fearless in challenging the status quo – the ‘rules’ of life were established by people who were no smarter than you.
