Who are you and what’s your background?
My name is Gustas Dzemyda. I am 19 years old, born in Lithuania. I am the founder and owner of the label Kernkraft Records and the CEO of the sub-label We Unite. In addition to this, I recently became the manager of Tom Wilson. I got into music when I was about 13 years old and since then have been spending more and more time in this industry. Starting from absolutely nothing and having zero contacts or people to help me, I grew enough to own the record label, manage the artists and run a music promotion business.
What does your job consist of on a day to day basis?
I have a huge amount of daily tasks varying from listening to demos for my own label to developing the strategies for promotion and branding. I also spend a plethora of my time curating my own Spotify playlists. However, every day is different for me and each day is full of new tasks to be done … but I always try to achieve as much as possible from my “to do list”.
What do you enjoy most about it?
I am really fascinated by EDM itself. I love discovering new artists and tracks … that is what I enjoy in this industry. In addition to that, it is a great feeling to connect with so many producers, managers, label owners and all others from this industry. It allows me to get behind the scenes and I was always into that. Even though the job itself is really exhausting and requires plenty of effort, I really love it and would never leave it.
What’s your biggest achievement to date?
My biggest achievement is probably the huge upcoming project I have and the people I am working with on it. However, I cannot announce anything about it yet. In terms of my own label, I would say that the support from biggest names in the scene such as Tiesto, Don Diablo, W&W and many more is a really great accomplishment so far.
Any tips and tricks that you wish you knew when you started?
It is really difficult to say as I am still finding out new tricks while growing. I think everything just comes with time if you keep working on your thing. However, the only tip I would have to say for anyone who is just starting is that quality is better than quantity. Keep that in mind.
For the readers looking to pursue a career in your field, do you have any advice for them?
Being in this field for a while, I started to notice that many people are copying each other. Don’t do that. Trying to become someone else won’t lead to success. Always stay unique, generate your own ideas and be original.
Who are your favourite artists at the moment?
There are many great artists out there and it is difficult to pick only few. However, I really admire JOYRYDE, Curbi, RetroVision and Tom Wilson of course.
What do you look for in a song / artist?
Quality is always the main thing. Originality is also very important. Vocals play a big role nowadays too. The catchier the vocals on a track are – the bigger the audience it can reach. Combining all these factors leads to successful song.
How do you overcome days where you have no motivation?
When I have a lot of work and time is pressing me, I just force myself to work and get the tasks done. When there is more time for less work, I prefer to watch some videos from business people on Youtube (Gary Vaynerchuk usually) or just take a break, read the news or check social media where I am following many motivational pages with some wise and really inspiring quotes.
What do you do when your not working (for downtime)?
I spend plenty of my time studying and learning as I am still at university. Besides that, I am working out daily to keep myself fit and healthy. Friends and family are a really important part of one’s life, so I always try to spend some quality time with them too.
Any recent announcements and/or upcoming stuff you would like to announce to the readers?
First of all, there are some incredibly good releases coming on Kernkraft Records. Secondly, we are working on Kernkraft Records’ merchandise, which should become available in the near future. I also have much more big things and announcements coming soon, which I cannot make public yet. Just keep an eye on my projects and you will see!
Your own personal tips for success (either in music or life in general)?
Don’t be afraid to fail – mistakes allow a person to learn. Surround yourself with positive people with a similar mindset. That will make a difference. Always stay hungry for success. Most importantly, don’t think about your dream, work for it. Just work harder than everyone else around you does and keep being patient – everything will come in time.
