Who are you and what’s your background?
My name is Kevin Continelli, born and raised in Montreal, Canada. I am 2nd generation Italian.
What does your job consist of on a day to day basis?
I do artist management for Tom Ferry and ILY. I help support them and I do some A&R work here and there for other artists!
What do you enjoy most about it?
I enjoy the thrill of getting their music and projects to the point of release and helping in the process as well as maintaining that success through the days and weeks after release. I enjoy connecting with other music business people and discuss passion projects and the industry and the ever so changing buy and streaming landscape of the music industry. From an A&R stand point, I love digging deep into the actual song process with helpful tips in production and overall direction.
What’s your biggest achievement to date?
Biggest achievement to date I would have to say is “Remedy,” a single that was released by both my artists Tom ferry and ILY and was taken under the wing of international DJ Mike Mago. “Remedy” has 25 million streams to date.
Any tips and tricks that you wish you knew when you started?
I’d have to say perhaps knowing how to better connect via email and even taking some courses in business could have definitely helped in my progression in the Music Industry.
For the readers looking to pursue a career in your field, do you have any advice for them?
Get out there, get noticed and talk to people. Don’t shy away or you may miss your mark. Also read, read up, and get informed. Take a course in business and do your homework on who it is you should be getting in contact with. Never give up, and keep pushing, eventually someone will take notice.
Who are your favourite artists at the moment?
Well there are many artists which I have liked for many years but if I had to pick someone over the last year or so I would have to say my own artist ILY from Sweden, who is definitely taking Scandinavian pop into a new direction. With catchy hooks and eargasmic rhythms, she’s definitely one to be on the lookout for. Another vocalist would be Mabel, form the UK. She really has that “IT” factor.
What do you look for in a song / artist?
Authenticity, originality and soul. I look for that factor that can’t be explained. They just have it. It’s something you can’t really teach … well you can help it form and surface if the artist never had the opportunity to do so before (whether it be through money, or a real recording studio) … but generally it occurs naturally. I tend to stick to grooves and melody, I like to feel the energy in a track; the passion and the conviction the artist is portraying! Often, I can tell if the artist is not one hundred percent attached to a project, or if it was a quick cut job. I’ll listen to something dozens of time in a row on repeat to see if I miss anything and then go back to it a day or two later to see if I still feel the same way. It’s a passion and I love doing it.
How do you overcome days where you have no motivation?
It can definitely be tough at times, with doors getting slammed in your face left and right, but I just keep my head up and I say to myself, it’ll come, you have the perfect artists producing absolutely outstanding music, someone with the same passion will see them and get it. I try hard not to look at what others are doing, but it’s a bit of a catch 22 when my job is literally to listen to music. So then I just say to myself, I can do that, I can get there, keep pushing.
What do you do when your not working (for downtime)?
Gym, food, gym, food and repeat. Haha. I’m a foodie, I love trying new restaurants and experiencing new culinary delights, but of course with that comes health and fitness to compensate for all that food. My fiancée is very into fitness and he pushes me to get myself to the gym. I really appreciate the drive he instills in me and in turn it helps with focus, achieving goals and keeps my mind energized and ready for what’s yet to come.
Any recent announcements and/or upcoming stuff you would like to announce to the readers?
On the Tom Ferry front, we are gearing up for a new release on November 9th, it’s a bit of a different vibe from him but still definitely on the house/dance front. Can’t wait for it. ILY is currently working on her debut EP, not sure when or where that’ll come out but were looking at early 2019.
Your own personal tips for success (either in music or life in general)?
I’ve pretty much explained this in some of my previous answers, but if I should add anything, it is to not be shy. Don’t be afraid to come out of your comfort zone and ask around, there are more nice people willing to help then there are people not willing to help. Don’t stop following up. I’ve watched many artist documentaries and read plenty of artist bios to know that you should never miss an opportunity to pitch your work or show off your craft.
