Motivational Monday’s Episode 34: Graham Phipps – Managing Director of Boy From The Beach

Who are you and what’s your background?

Hello! My name is Graham, i’m from and live in the UK, I work with Boy From The Beach where we run a management company and also have a label with Disco:wax. We manage a mixture of dance/pop artists, producers, DJ’s and singer/songwriters such as Möwe, Decoy!,  Jameson, Jantine, Bright Sparks, Rani and Jonasu. I also manage a trance project under the name of HØLY WATERS where two established artists in the scene joined forces to create a duo! I began as a promoter in the hardcore scene when I was 18 and created a label stemming from that event. Spotify wasn’t even in the UK then so as you can imagine things have changed quite a lot since then! Since then I studied a music business degree in London and then it all kicked off working in management from then!

What does your job consist of on a day to day basis?

Each day can be vary hugely to be honest! I start my day checking any emails that have come in over night, prep for any calls I have that day and start working through my tasks for that day. Generally tasks on the management side are things such as sending out new music to labels, toplines to artists, working on upcoming shows and tour managing, arranging studio sessions and production schedules, working on contracts and accounting, setting up merch lines, planning music videos etc but things can completely vary from day to day! On the label side I listen to new music, reach out to new artists and work with these artists on their release goals, their needs, and working with the rest of the team at the label to plan out marketing and release schedules! There is some insane music coming and its really exciting to get this out there to the world and seeing the track develop and grow!!

What do you enjoy most about it?

I actually love it all! Along with everything I mentioned above I absolutely love working with these super talented people, getting to know the artists and most of all helping them achieve their dreams! Its so exciting seeing a track have insane success, landing that big cut, a big show, or a track with an amazing label. I love the buzz you get from that! I have to add I love the travel that comes with the job too, I have been to some amazing places and all over the world with my job, and met some incredible people and made amazing friends along the way! But I guess one of the biggest drives for me is making other people happy and helping them achieve what they want with their music!

Any tips and tricks that you wish you knew when you started?

I always wanted to work in the industry when I was younger and from studying music business too I found that you learn so so much for from actually working in the industry! When I was younger I didn’t even know half of the jobs I know of and sometimes do existed, so I think knowing about these certain jobs earlier would have given me a kick start to know what I wanted to do earlier on in life. On that note I also feel that music education should be a lot more predominant into the school curriculum, there wasn’t even an option to study music in my GCSE’s (14-16 years old).

For the readers looking to pursue a career in your field, do you have any advice for them?

Networking, work hard, get involved in any way you can, if you want to work on the business side don’t be afraid to set up something yourself. Learn as much as you can about the industry, read, watch videos, study it. It will be a huge help to you further down the line.

Who are your favourite artists at the moment?

NF, Trove, Halsey, Lane8 and Grace Carter i’m listening to a lot of right now! And the new 21 Savage album! Bit of a random mixture I know!

How do you overcome days where you have no motivation?

On the whole I am really motivated, as I love what I do! I have had jobs in the past I didn’t enjoy, which always makes me very grateful for where I am now! I would say the gym is good for motivation though, it’s good for your mind as well as your body, although I definitely haven’t been going enough – new year and time to get back in there though!

What do you do when your not working (for downtime)?

I find it quite hard to bring myself away from work actually haha but the gym as mentioned, hanging out with friends the usual. I love snowboarding but definitely need to do more of it, so booking something up at the moment actually!

Any recent announcements and/or upcoming stuff you would like to announce to the readers?

There is so much exciting stuff happening right now, we fully launched the label with Discowax last year, they are an incredible team to work with and I am very excited to see this grow. We are releasing music with Fabian Mazur, Pablo Nouvelle, Trove, Botalks and Jonasu to name a few in the next coming months. We are also working with Discowax and Four Music with Möwe and we have a stack load of new singles coming out this year with the next one in February!
Jameson is a very exciting project too. He is an insaaanley talented 19 year old working on a house project, he only has two tracks out but has already had support from Kisss FM and BBC Radio, we are working with Lost Frequencies label. Some unreal collabs to come too with the singers we work with, Jantine, Bright Sparks, Rani, RØRY, I really really wish I could tell you everything right now but you will hear soon for sure!
On another note HØLY WATERS are about to fly out to Lapland to film a music video for the next single and planning out touring for the year! So keep your eyes peeled for them!

Your own personal tips for success (either in music or life in general)?

My morals are always to work your absolute ass off, you will get back what you put in. Also to be loyal, and be nice, I think that’s important.
