Who are you and what’s your background?
My name is Hunter Thompson and I’m an editor at Run The Trap and publicist for k?d, Autograf, Medasin, Drezo, and ALT:Vision Records. I started out at Run The Trap years ago and realized that I wanted to move more into the music industry. My friend Adam had started a management company and he invited me to join the crew and that’s how I decided to become a publicist.
What does your job consist of on a day to day basis?
On a day to day basis I’m always trying to expand my network and find new connections at outlets that I currently don’t have a relationship with. I’m also constantly pitching out new music that’s unreleased, developing marketing plans, and figuring out ways to be creative about releases.
What do you enjoy most about it?
I love sharing music. Music has always been a big passion of mine since I was a kid. That’s carried over into my adult profession. Being able to share music that I’m passionate about and that other people love means the world to me. I also have to make sure the Run The Trap team is on top of new and breaking news and make sure all relevant releases are covered.
What’s your biggest achievement to date?
I’m very proud of our Too Future guest mix series. We’ve had all sorts of artists from Louis The Child, San Holo, Jai Wolf, and many more artists on the series. Being able to work with these sort of artists from the beginning to seeing where they are now is pretty astounding.
For the readers looking to pursue a career in your field, do you have any advice for them?
Get out there and network. No one is going to push for you harder than yourself so you need to meet people and figure out how to work together. Know what you stand for and why. It’s not hard to find someone’s email or LinkedIn profile and start up a conversation.
Who are your favourite artists at the moment?
I listen to a lot of indie rock lately. My favorite artists to listen to right now are Snail Mail, Sasha Sloan, Phoebe Bridgers, and Hazel English. I’ve also been binging on Crystal Castles and The Naked and Famous hard lately.
How do you overcome days where you have no motivation?
I know that people’s livelihoods are relying on me to do my job properly. Knowing that I’m not just working for myself, but for others helps me get over the edge and continue grinding even if I lack any motivation.
What do you do when your not working (for downtime)?
I love hiking in the mountains. I moved to Colorado about a year ago and have a lot to explore still. I also go to too many concerts and enjoy a good game of frisbee golf.
